Rodney Costal Challenge

On Sunday 17th November the KWC team hit the trails, roads and water to compete in the Rodney Coastal Challenge. What was expected to be a nice day out on a sunny Sunday turned into a dreary cold wet morning. We pushed on regardless and gave it our best.

Supporting the KWC racing team were friends and family who cheered us on and drove support vehicles to each of the transitions.

Mick was first to lead the team with the running leg through the forest. Everyone’s enthusiasm was high as we eagerly waited for the first runners to re-emerge from the forest.

The cold weather made the wait for the road cyclist miserable but it wasn’t long before Mick steamed across the timing plate with a ‘high five’ to tag the next KWC team member.

Steve was next with the road cycling leg in the rain but thankfully with a downhill to start and little head wind. Along the wet main roads through Helensville and then to tackle the mighty hill out of Kaukapakapa. Slowly but surely the hill was conquered and as the day wore on, the sun started to make a welcome appearance.

Steve passed the baton on to Bo who was patiently waiting to start the mountain bike leg. With a fresh set of legs Bo powered off on the dirt roads. While tackling the 2 grunty hills, Bo passed a few other competitors making up a few placings.

Brandon followed the mountain bike leg with the kayak section paddling away down the river. The challenge came for all when the river opened out into the eastly headwind. This didn’t phase Brandon who made a very respectable time for the kayak leg bringing our team home with a run across the finish line.

By this time the sun had turned the day into a pleasant afternoon in Wenderholm where Sam had setup an excellent and well deserved BBQ.

With medals in hand the KWC team recuperated over the next few days reflecting on a great day out. A successful event was had with some KWC team building but also catching up and having a laugh with friends from other companies.
